Privacy Policy
This policy explains what personal information The Dubai Expat Guide collects when you use our website and buy the guide, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We collect as little as we can to run the service, and we do not sell your information.
1. What we collect
- Account details: your email address and a password (stored in hashed form, never in plain text) when you create an account after purchase.
- Purchase details: confirmation of your purchase, your email address, the amount paid and your country, passed to us by our payment provider. We never see or store your full card details.
- Reading data: which articles you have read and which checklist items you have ticked, so your progress follows you between devices.
- Technical data: your IP address, browser and device type, and the approximate country your connection comes from. We use the country only to show a relevant line on the home page and it is not stored against you.
- Messages: anything you choose to send us by email.
2. How we use it
- to give you access to the guide and keep your account secure;
- to save your reading and checklist progress;
- to process your purchase and keep records required by law;
- to reply to you when you contact us;
- to keep the site working, fix problems and prevent misuse.
We will only send you marketing emails if you have asked to receive them, and every one will include a way to unsubscribe.
3. Cookies and local storage
We use a small number of essential cookies and your browser’s local storage to keep you logged in, remember your access and store preferences such as dark mode and whether the sidebar is open. These are needed for the site to work. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
4. Who we share it with
We share information only with the service providers we need to run the guide, and only as much as they need:
- our payment provider, who acts as merchant of record and processes your payment under its own privacy policy;
- our website hosting and database providers;
- an email provider, to send account and purchase emails.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it. We never sell or rent your personal information.
5. International transfers
Our providers may store and process data in countries other than your own, including the United States and the European Union. Where that happens, we rely on providers that apply appropriate safeguards to protect it.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your account and reading data for as long as your account is open. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete that data, except for purchase records we are legally required to keep for tax and accounting purposes.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, or receive a copy of it. To make any of these requests, email hello@dubaiexpatguide.com. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority where you live.
8. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections and hashed passwords. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password for your account.
9. Children
The guide is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when it last changed. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will tell you by email.
11. Contact
